  5. A Few Lucky Gamers Could Be Playing 'Halo 3' By Spring PlayStation 3, Wii arrivals likely played a role in Microsoft's beta-test announcement. If you have an Xbox 360 and weren't expecting to play "Halo 3" until late next year, Microsoft might as well have announced the release of a time machine on Wednesday (November 15). According to an announcement dashed out at in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, a multiplayer beta-test version of the first-person shooter's sequel will be available for public play in the spring. The news didn't include many details, such as how many members of the public would be able to join the beta test through their Xbox 360s. A follow-up post on the Web site of "Halo" developer Bungie Studios (Bungie.net) offered just a little more insight. "You'll be playing a little multiplayer and simultaneously providing us with some valuable data to help our development team," wrote Bungie's community manager Brian Jarrard. "We're still working out the details on timing and scope and there will be a lot more info coming in the weeks ahead. We can confirm that you will absolutely be required to have an Xbox 360." Giving gamers a chance to play a game early and work out development bugs in the process is not new. PC and online-enabled consoles have hosted tests for years. But often the events are invite-only, such as the current "World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade" beta that launched last month. A spokesperson for Microsoft told MTV News that the "Halo 3" test will not be invite-only. The rep could net yet confirm whether the service would be solely for Xbox Live Gold subscribers or to the entire pool of Xbox Live users, which includes those who use the free-with-the-360 Xbox Live Silver. The PS3 will be released Friday (see "PlayStation 3 Preview: Gamers Get A Test Drive, Luda's Left Out"), a factor that likely played a role in the "Halo 3" announcement. And to further draw attention to the system that kicked off the next generation of gaming a year ago, Microsoft and Bungie announced that a "Halo 3" commercial will air during ESPN's "Monday Night Football" on December 4. On Bungie.net, Jarrard indicated that the commercial would not show actual gameplay footage captured from a 360 but would still reveal details about the big game in "photo-realistic" detail. "Just because you're seeing a kind of 'real-life' representation of 'Halo 3' doesn't mean you aren't seeing real gameplay elements from 'Halo 3,' " he wrote. And wait — there's more: Bungie and Microsoft said spring 2007 will also bring the release of new downloadable maps for the original Xbox's "Halo 2," a game still widely played on both Xbox and the backward-compatible Xbox 360. The announcement of the multiplayer maps for "Halo 2" proved that there are always multiple ways to announce news. There's the Microsoft PR approach in its press release on Wednesday, promising, "The exclusive 'Halo 2' content will bring new experiences and excitement to the seminal sequel that made entertainment retail history in its first 24 hours — with $125 million in sales — and that boasts more than 4 billion online matches since its release in 2004." Then there's the way Bungie put it, in the developers' site, spending less time enthusing about the new levels (which they promise will be "really cool") and more time apologizing that only gamers playing "Halo 2" on Xbox 360 will be able to access the levels, rather than those who play the game on the original Xbox. "That last point is probably going to rub some of you the wrong way," Jarrard wrote. "And frankly, we can't really blame you for potentially being a little upset at this news. We're really excited that these maps are coming together and we have the opportunity to give our fans some new content over two years after the game shipped, but ultimately, when it comes to pricing and timing and distribution and exclusivity, it's not up to Bungie. We make games and in this case we're making maps. Microsoft Game Studios is our publisher and they have the final call on the when/where/how part of the equation. "We've seen a gradual shift in our online population more and more towards Xbox 360, but I know there are a lot of folks out there who haven't made the switch yet," he continued. "Does that mean you'll never get to play these new 'Halo 2' maps? We can't say for certain, but ultimately we hope to find ways to make the maps more accessible to more fans over time." Last week MTV News interviewed the top Xbox executive at Microsoft, Peter Moore, and asked him if there might be any "Halo 3"-related efforts scheduled for the current week, scheduled to steal thunder from the Friday PS3 launch and the Wii's arrival in America on Sunday (see "Microsoft Exec Talks Movie Downloads For Xbox 360, Delayed 'Halo' Film"). Moore was asked if a "Halo 3" demo would pop up on Xbox Live this week. He shot it down and guaranteed no "Halo 3" demo would be coming this year. Next time the questions about impending surprises will be phrased more carefully. For "Halo" fans, today's triple announcement likely has thunder enough.
