Exclusive French Interview (translated)

 

This is a video from French creator Julien Chièze, who had a 1 on 1 with Kojima at Gamescon. I have taken the time to translate it to .ake connections with all of you.

 

Hideo is very tired atm so the interview was done with previous written questions.

  1. The development is coming to an end how do you feel emotionally and physically?
  2. Its very hard, we're battling against time and i'm overseeing production, marketing... AND WHAT WILL COME NEXT! I've been working 4 years but i've been here before and know how it is.

  3. Is the publishing of a game comparable to giving birth?

  4. 4 years ago i thought i would never have another baby, but I now feel that feeling again, that mix of suffering and joy of giving life. I cannot be completely satisfied if the players aren't as well.

  5. so 4 years ago, you started from scratch...

  6. yes it was very overwhelming, in 2016 we were a handful of people in a tiny office and in June of the same year we started game design, casting without even knowing the whole game. It's like a marathon where the middle is the hardest part. The start is easy everyone is full of energy, then in the middle you cannot see the end and it feels like there is no end and it's a terribly draining. But honestly, the closer we get to the end the more we see that arrival which gives us extra strength.

  7. So how did it all come to be?

  8. o begin with, i had MANY ideas and concepts, but to be honest DS was NOT the first idea, it was literally the last. There was ANOTHER game that I had to abandon and I will probably never come back to it. So that is how DS was born.

  9. with DS you said you wanted to opt for a brand new, never seen multiplayer approach, can you tell is a little more about the social strand system? -i'm going to let you down, but I cannot say anything atm. All i can say is that it is an open world in which the players will quickly find out that the approach is different. Its going to be hard task and you must reconnect a fractured society and split up humans, you do this with a character who has nothing to do with superheroes. Sam is just by himself and must survive, he has no special power. The more you play the more you will notice that he isn't the only one in this situation. At launch, there will probably be millions of people who will play and you will be CONNECTED to them USING SOMETHING...

  11. yes, its like Miles Morales in the Spiderman Spider-verse. Miles thinks he is the only spiderman, then different characters from different alternate dimensions also become Spiderman and meet up, all of a sudden Miles is not alone! Of course DS will be different but it's a clue towards what the game is about. Sorry but i really cant say anymore, is that ok? (Glorious Kojima Laugh)

  12. it's frustrating, but at least we don't have much to wait...

  13. don't get me started! Sometimes while browsing twitter i see people posting countdowns to release date. I told myself "there are not many days left"!!! It makes me think of ROCKETS BEFORE COUNTDOWN but its a good kind of stress.

  14. You bring up your age quite often and say that tomorrow is in our hands, what message do you wanna send with DS?

  15. i believe we have changed era. In the past, I worked for a big company, but now it's all different, I'm like you, i became independent, and that works (i believe he is directly referring to Julien). People are more connected to the net and AI are getting better, we will need intermediaries less and less. I think that this movement constitutes a real freedom for creators. The goal is to connect between creators and players. We could go with big companies and intermediaries but we took our own independence. I'm 56 and I could have gone on a pension in a few years, but i decided to fund my independent studio. Many say: "if you are a game designer and you quit a big company, you're fucked and it's finished!" All my friends and my wife told me i was crazy. Then again, i did not hesitate, i was confident in what i wanted to do, and continued doing what i always did. The only difference being the indie status. I just wanted to prove that its possible.

  16. yes, and i wouldn't want them to lose money commercially. But the most important thing to me is TO CREATE A BRAND NEW EXPERIENCE AND to try and CHANGE THE WORLD.

  18. yes, its a state of mind. When i was a kid i wanted to become an astronaut, this year its the 50th of the apollo11. Think about it, 50 years ago many people got together and accomplished something unimaginable, they landed on the moon and returned alive. They MADE THE IMPOSSIBLE, POSSIBLE... Many people stop at their difficulties by saying, i'm not going to make it, then there are THE PIONEERS AND EXPLORERS. So when I compare my difficulties with those of the Apollo i laugh and tell myself I can do more.

  19. speaking of the moon, by following you on twitter it is easy to see your fascination with it. It is present in your company trailer with the ludens mascot. Would you like to go there one day?

  20. honestly, i would love to be in space and look at earth, not necessarily the moon . But to do that i would have to get rid of my family and my job, Sony would not be happy with that (glorious Kojima laugh)

part 2

  1. If you had heartman's condition what would you do in the 21 minutes?
  2. huummm probably create a videogame!

  3. it would be a very small game!

  4. well remember he dies for 3mins and comes back for 21 in a loop. As soon as I would resuscitate i would start working again. I also love drawing and sculpting, but they are very time consuming tasks. Therefore i would return to videogames which group all the arts, history, psychology...

  5. It shocks me that you have not directed a short movie yet!

  6. it has been proposed to me a few times, but ai declined for the moment. If I ever do, i will never leave videogames though. Games have unpredictable players, its a rich environment. I will never stop!

  7. i believe many people would not want you to stop! -i often hear that the gaming industry is not made for people 40+, but look at me (i'm mr meeseeks, sorry could not help myself) i'm nearly 60, i dont have the same physical energy but i have tons of experience that make me better. Also in the future i will probably have a ROBOT body and i will compete with the young ones (glorious Kojima laugh).

  8. The young ones are more and more connected virtually and not physically, do you take that at heart?

  9. well we have never been this connected and at times its like we never stop fighting each other. There is a lot of negativity online. And it's the same in games. Everyone is connected and all they do is meet up in arenas and pass their time fighting and shooting at each other, they battle. They don't know their adversary but they wanna show them who is the strongest, the weakest are washed away. The dominant phylosophy is to use the stick in its metaphorical sense. For DS i was heavily inspired by Kōbo Abe's novel "the rope". We discover that at the dawn of humanity we used the stick to repel problems and to fight.

  10. Some of your games use the stick mechanic...

  11. yes, because its our primal instinct to use any form of weapon. But returning to humanity, the second invention was the rope which on the contrary is used to keep what we love closer. DS fits into this philosophy. The imagery of the hands in the trailers reflects the connections and the strands in the logo are the ropes that hold us together.

  12. modern society seems to have become an expert in using the stick...

  13. one thing is for sure, for this game i just wanted to surround myself with people who could use ropes. The actors, our musician friends, the team... We all connected. At the same time the media relay what Trump says, there has been brexit... OUR SOCIETIES ARE FRACTURING and becoming extremely individualistic and social reserves become trench wars. DS carries an opposite ideal. It will push you to make connections with other people which could change your view on the world. Pushing the players to question who we are and where we are going, that is my ambition for the game.

    1. You game carries a political message, many creators say their games don't include political messages...
  14. that has always surprised me, whenever you create something it carries a message. When I was young, the mangas i read regurgitated messages at me, and i grew up with them. Mangas nowadays are like Hollywood movies. They are marketed well and well calibrated ingredients are injected in them. Today at my age i dont make my games for money, in the time i have left I will concentrate in making something new that stimulates reactions in others. To use the example from before, to those who are not interested in going to the moon, immagine going to mars or seeing jupiter? I WANT TO INVITE THE NEW GENERATIONS TO ASK THESE KIND OF QUESTIONS.

  15. the critical and commercial destiny of DS will be crucial for this message?

  16. well since i'm an indie studio, j can make small videogames that are faster to produce, i spoke with Guillermo Del Toro and he talked me out of it. He told me "continue making AAA games in an open, stunning world, that:s what people look for in a Hideo Kojima game!" So then i started following my instincts, the hardest part was game design since it is something that has never been done before. I also know my fans are expecting a great story, if this game does not do well, DS will have failed to show you what I want you to see.

  17. since you are a father, and i will become a father soon, do you have any tips for new parents? -your view of life will change. Today you choose what to eat, what to drink, who to see, when to sleep... But with a child you need to think, is he happy? How does he feel? I've been living in Tokyo and my child is in Kobe. every day i check the weather forecast, not for Tokyo but for Kobe because i think of him. Don't look at it as a limitation but as an opening. In reality i have used this in the creative process. Having a child is to shift ones centre of gravity in the depths. You receive lots of love in return. Have you chosen a name for the child? Will it be Hideo? (Much LOL).

Это прекрасно. Лучше бы еще меньше показывал/рассказывал. Единственная игра, которая действительно удивит на выходе.

MGS3 перепрохожу сейчас. До мурашек в некоторых моментах вообще.

Думаю это та же тварь с которой Ридус дрался в японском трейлере только огромная, возможно она пожирая тела становится больше.
